Retracing the Camino, the pilgrim path to Santiago: day one In 1999 The Telegraph's Derek Bishton became one of more than 100,000 people a year who walk the Camino - the route across Northern Spain to the shrine of St James in Santiago de Compostela that pilgrims have been following for more than a thousand years. Ten years on, he retraces his journey.
His original pilgrimage took 31 days during which time he stayed mostly in pilgrim hostels with his world packed into a rucksack.

This time he retraces his journey by road with the luxury of five star accommodation. His challenge: to complete the journey in three days, while still capturing the most memorable locations and the feelings they evoke.
On day one he travelled from Pamplona to San Juan de Ortega.
Day two took him from Burgos to León.
On the third and final day
Derek travels from León to Santiago.
