The Question - Should a Mosque be built at Ground Zero |
|
|
| |
|
A proposal to build an Islamic Centre near Ground Zero,
where the twin towers of the World Trade Centre once stood
in the US city of New York, has met with loud opposition from some Americans.
The Cordoba Initiative group, which says it aims to improve Muslim-West relations,
plans to build a community centre near the site to help spread the message of tolerance.
Local authorities, including New York's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, as well as
residents in the neighbourhood, have welcomed the centre.
But a small, vocal group led by the Stop Islamisation of America movement says
the centre has no business being near Ground Zero. |

Many applauded the decision, but others shouted "shame" and one women held a placard saying: "Don't glorify murders of 3,000, no 9/11 mosque" and "Islam builds mosques at the sites of their conquests." |

Radical Islamism is more than simply a religious belief. It is a comprehensive political, economic, and religious movement that seeks to impose sharia—Islamic law—upon all aspects of global society.
Many Muslims see sharia as simply a reference point for their personal code of conduct. They recognize the distinction between their personal beliefs and the laws that govern all people of all faiths. |
|
The problem of creeping sharia is most visibly on display in France and in the United Kingdom, where there are Muslim enclaves in which the police have surrendered authority and sharia reigns |
The true intentions are also revealed by the name initially proposed for the Ground Zero mosque—“Cordoba House”—which is named for a city in Spain where a conquering Muslim army replaced a church with a mosque. |

Last week, Newt Gingrich released at Newt.org concerning the project. As you may have heard, he's somewhat opposed to it. And to explain why, he offered this history lesson:
The proposed "Cordoba House" overlooking the World Trade Center site – where a group of jihadists killed over 3000 Americans and destroyed one of our most famous landmarks - is a test of the timidity, passivity and historic ignorance of American elites. For example, most of them don’t understand that “Cordoba House” is a deliberately insulting term. It refers to Cordoba, Spain – the capital of Muslim conquerors who symbolized their victory over the Christian Spaniards by transforming a church there into the world’s third-largest mosque complex. [...I]n fact, every Islamist in the world recognizes Cordoba as a symbol of Islamic conquest. It is a sign of their contempt for Americans and their confidence in our historic ignorance that they would deliberately insult us this way. [emphasis mine]
It's that appositive phrase there buried in the middle of my quote that is the problem. In these twenty-five words, Newt offers the final word on medieval Cordoba: "the capital of Muslim conquerors who symbolized their victory over Christian Spaniards by transforming a church there into the world's third-largest mosque complex." This fact, the transformation of a church into a mosque, is the only thing we should think of when we hear a modern Muslim use the word "Cordoba," according to Mr. Gingrich.

Sharia and Western Civilization
Sharia law is used in many Muslim countries to justify shocking acts of barbarity including stoning, the execution of homosexuals, and the subjugation of women. Sharia does not permit freedom of conscience; it prohibits Muslims from renouncing their Islamic faith or converting to another religion. Sharia does not support religious liberty; it treats non-Muslims as inferior and does not accord them the same protections as Muslims. In these and other instances, sharia is explicitly at odds with core Western values. It is an explicit repudiation of freedom of conscience and religious liberty as well as the premise that citizens are equal under the law.
Thus, the radical Islamist effort to impose sharia worldwide is a direct threat to all those who believe in the freedoms maintained by our constitutional system. |

Comments: By allowing Sharia Law to operate in our country, are we not setting ourselves up for a fall. By allowing this you are dividing the population into two groups. You can't have two sets of laws that apply to two groups of citizens, this can only be devisive and instead of us being a multi cultural society with citizens being encouraged to be tolerant of the others beliefs, this wil have the possibility to enflame each other. |
